Microsoft IQ: Building the Intelligence Layer for Enterprise AI

AI is quickly becoming part of how organizations analyze information, make decisions, and automate work. But as companies move from experimenting with AI to deploying Copilot and AI agents across the enterprise, one challenge becomes increasingly important:

AI needs more than access to data. It needs context.

An AI agent may be able to access thousands of tables, documents, reports, and applications. That does not necessarily mean it understands how the business operates, what the data represents, or how different pieces of information relate to one another.

That is the problem Microsoft IQ is designed to address.

Microsoft IQ provides an intelligence layer that brings together organizational, business, enterprise knowledge, and external context to help Copilot and AI agents better understand, reason, and act.

Understanding the Microsoft IQ Ecosystem

Microsoft IQ brings together four areas of intelligence that provide different types of context to AI.

Work IQ

Work IQ helps AI understand how the organization works.

It provides context around people, collaboration, workflows, and information across Microsoft 365.

This can help Copilot understand not only the information available to an organization, but also the context surrounding how people actually work with that information.

Fabric IQ

Fabric IQ helps AI understand the business behind the data.

Organizations typically have thousands of tables, columns, metrics, and relationships spread across multiple systems.

Humans understand that a customer places an order, an order generates revenue, and an unpaid invoice creates an accounts receivable balance. The underlying data platform may simply see separate tables and fields.

Fabric IQ helps add that business meaning through concepts such as semantic models, relationships, business entities, rules, and ontology.

This creates an important bridge between the technical data model and the business model.

Foundry IQ

Foundry IQ connects AI agents to trusted enterprise knowledge.

Not everything an AI agent needs exists in a database.

Organizations also have contracts, policies, procedures, documentation, knowledge bases, and other unstructured information that provides important context.

Foundry IQ helps make that enterprise knowledge available to AI agents so they can reason using trusted organizational information.

Web IQ

Web IQ brings external context into AI experiences.

Sometimes the information needed to answer a question exists outside the enterprise.

Web IQ enables AI experiences to incorporate current external information when appropriate, complementing the organization’s internal data and knowledge.

From Data Platform to Intelligence Platform

This represents an important evolution in enterprise data architecture.

For years, organizations have focused on building pipelines that move data from operational systems into centralized platforms for analytics.

A typical architecture might look like:

Source Systems → Microsoft Fabric → OneLake → Semantic Models → Power BI

That foundation remains critical.

But Microsoft IQ introduces another layer:

Source Systems → Fabric and OneLake → Semantic Models and Business Context → Microsoft IQ → Copilot and AI Agents → Business Users

The goal is no longer simply to make data available.

The goal is to make data understandable to both people and AI.

What Could This Look Like in Practice?

Consider a CFO asking an AI agent:

“Which customers represent the greatest collections risk this quarter?”

Answering that question properly could require understanding customer information, invoices, payment history, aging balances, revenue, contracts, and potentially other business rules.

Simply connecting an AI model to those tables does not automatically provide that understanding.

The intelligence layer needs to understand relationships such as:

Customer → Invoice → Payment → AR Balance → Revenue Exposure

Once those relationships and definitions are established, AI has much richer business context for answering questions and supporting workflows.

That is where technologies such as Fabric IQ become particularly important.

The Data Foundation Still Matters

The rise of Microsoft IQ does not reduce the importance of modern data architecture.

It makes it more important.

Copilot and AI agents still depend on the quality of the information underneath them.

Organizations need:

✓ Trusted and governed data
✓ Modern data architecture
✓ Consistent business definitions
✓ Strong semantic models
✓ Well defined relationships
✓ Data security and governance
✓ Clear business context

Without that foundation, organizations risk creating sophisticated AI experiences on top of inconsistent or poorly understood information.

Where ProvenBI Fits

At ProvenBI, we see Microsoft IQ as a natural extension of the modern data platform.

Our work starts with helping organizations build trusted, scalable data foundations using technologies such as Microsoft Fabric, OneLake, Power BI, and the broader Microsoft data ecosystem.

But the opportunity increasingly extends beyond traditional analytics.

Organizations need to think about how their data architecture will support Copilot, AI agents, conversational analytics, and intelligent business applications.

That means designing data platforms not only for today’s dashboards and reporting requirements, but also for tomorrow’s AI experiences.

The progression is becoming clear:

Modern Data Platform → Trusted Business Context → Intelligent Insights → AI Agents and Copilot

Microsoft IQ provides another important piece of that architecture.

At ProvenBI, our goal is to help organizations build the foundation that makes these capabilities useful, trusted, and scalable.

Because the future of enterprise AI is not simply about giving AI access to more data.

It is about giving AI trusted data and the business context to understand it.
